This is the one of the boards we plan to use so we can make our setting look less like a school and we can split the office into separate working stations.

This is a room that we may use but we might have some issues with space, but there is a white wall so if we need to do any close up's we can use the wall as it was blank. 

Poster Analysis

This is a advertising poster for Paramore latest album, straight away you can see the band , big and clearly, so you know exactly who they are, they also have the front cover of the album so if you was to go into a shop looking for it you would know what it looks like. The colours used are yellows, blacks and browns, which also reflect the colours in the image of the band as one band member has a jacket of these colours and the main singers hair colour also matches the colours in the poster. 


The text is all in capital letters to make it stand out to the target audience they are aiming for which would be teenagers it also makes the text feel important and bold. The band name stands out from the rest of the poster because of the different fonts and also the white background surrounding it makes it easier read and it is also the bands trademark font for their band name, it allows that to be recognized.

I decided to analyse Madonna Lucky Star as its one of my favorite songs and apply Goodwin's theories. 


1. Music Videos must demonstrate genre characteristics; this video features some characteristics that should feature in a pop song such as this such as a lot of attention on the singer, but she is a very tom-boyish girl and doesn't have much of a story line as most pop songs do, but this may be because of the time it was released. Because of the type of song it is from the lyrics you would think it was some kind of romantic video but there is no men involved apart from two male dancers and the setting doesn't change at all. 


2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals; there isn't much of a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals but because of the type of genre it was you would think there would be.




3. Relationship between Music and visuals; there are a few dance moves that are in time with the beat of the song. 

4. Demand of the record label; there are a lot of close ups on Madonna's face as she is the main person in the video but also to advertise her and her music by the way she id filmed and shown




5. Voyeuristic treatment of women; Madonna isn't much exposed in this video as she is in some of her other videos but there is close ups on her legs and stomach.

Digipacks

A digipack is a cardboard case normally for a promotion copy of a song, it also normally features the music video of this song.

The codes and conventions of a digipack is that they are made of cardboard, they must feature the record label logo to show who they are, the DVD logo to show it is DVD compatible, a bar code, copy right information. Information on the spine so when on a shelf so you can tell which album it is. It may also feature an information booklet inside the digipack. The song names will be on the back of the case, and the lyrics may be inside the information leaflet.

A record label may choose to use a digipack that a CD in a jewel case for many reasons, such as it would be a lot cheaper to produce cardboard copies than it would be to produce had copies, also when a jewel case breaks the cd will fall out or get damaged but when digipack starts to look worse for wear you can Sellotape it back together. Digipacks are normally sold for promotion.

The only added benefits to the consumer for buying a digipack would be more for value and a better design

Rough Trade!

Rough Trade started as a small shop in London that was in a rough area in the middle of a west indian community. It was ran by Geoff Travis who sold 2nd hand and different types of music records that you wouldn't have normally seen in the shops. They helped artists that were different and had a different type of music sell their music. 

Rough Trade made the Buzzcocks and well recognized band and sold 15,000 records, this inspired many artists to start doing things themselves and starting posting how to make a record and how much it would cost to distribute them records. 

Eventually Rough Trade started mail orders and were beginning to sell records across the world, this is when Rough Trade decided to go into becoming a record label, but with kinder contract rules such as they would share the profit equally. 

The Stiff Little Fingers were one band who made Rough Trade big and sold 100,000 records 

When the song Sweetest girl was released by Scritti Politti Rough Trade had decided that they could make money and great hits but they had no business experience and was getting further and further into finical difficulty and their move of premiss didn't help either , they eventually hired an accountant who came back showing that Rough Trade we close to going bust. This meant that Rough Trade had to sell the shop in London to 3 of the members of staff that had worked there. 

Then came along The Smiths they were a boy band that almost changed the face of Rough Trade, but as the band progressed it started to fall apart, The Smiths original ideas were being changed because of the demands from Rough Trade and London Records and disagreements were starting to form and the band split in 1987. 

Rough Trade decided to move building again and this finished them off. Cash flow stopped and 2/3rd of the staff were gone by 1991.

Geoff was still trying to keep Rough Trade alive and when they signed Pulp with the song common people. 


But finally Duffy with Mercy gave Rough Trade the number one they had been waiting for and Rough Trade have carried on with their laid back and let the artist find them selves.

This is Meiert Avis an Irish video and commercial director. Avis has directed videos for artists such as Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, U2, Avril Lavigne and Jennifer Lopez and many others.


Both the videos i have posted links for a pretty similar, they are both rock bands and are both very animated and set out like a fantasy and use a lot of yellows and browns.


But one song has some kind of band performance which is normal for a rock songs codes and conventions where as Paramores song has no band performance going against rock genres codes and conventions and even the bands normal music videos 

Music Video- Tenacious D

1. Genre Characteristics- its genre is a rock song and it shot in a typical rock song way as it was shot almost  as a performance, it also keeps the rock genre all the way through the video with the use of a topless devil and that they main singers are trouble makers. But they do not physically look like rock stars so goes against some of the conventions of the rock genre.

2. Relationship between Lyrics and Visuals- The video illustrates the story and the lyrics tells the story.

4. Demand of the Record Label and the need for Close ups on the Artist- There aren't many close ups on the artist, but there is a lot of exposure of them so this could suggest they need a lot more publicity than a more established band. Their record lable Epic Records and Sony wouldnt have put much pressure on Tenacious D because of the type of band and people they are.


5. Notion of looking and Voyeuristic treatment of the female body- There is no reference to woman apart from the little old lady being the evil one. Also referring to the notion of looking, throughout the video it looks like you are looking through the screen at the singers.


6. Intertextual reference- Ben Stiller features in this video and looking at a few other Tenacious D music video's he is often featured, there is also another famous person in the video Dave Grohl, who is also involved with Tenacious D 

Music Video- Jay- Z

1. Genre Characteristics- this video is set in Brooklyn and we know this because its on Jay-Z hoodie, it is a very Urban area. All through this video there is a wide range of representations of the gangster life such as people cruising in cars, dogs fights, getting pulled over by the police and the sound of gun shots. There are a few quick shots of scantily-clad women, suggesting its a rather cheap area. Their were a were scenes inside a jail which emphasises the gangster life even more.

2. Relationship between lyrics and visuals- Jay-Z sings 'from the hood' and then pulls his hood up. Then sings 'Radio' and a picture of a radio is shown. Also there is an image of a women and Jay-Z sings 'b***h'

There is a strong relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, but sometimes very literally and sometimes more subtle.

3. Relationship between music and visuals- The Video is cut in time with the beat of the song and the beat of the song is hard hitting and aggressive so giving the quick cuts a harder edge.

4. Demand of the Record Label and the need for Close ups on the Artist- There are a lot of close ups on men suggesting a male dominance over the video. But not so many shot of Jay-Z himself because he is an already established artist and doesn't need as much exposure as other new artists would

Also Jay-Z owns his own record company as well as being part of island/def jam which means even less control from the record company.

5. Notion of looking and Voyeuristic treatment of the female body- Jay-Z puts his hand over the camera so that it seems as though you are looking through his hand, there is also a x-ray vision shot through the boot, when Jay-Z gets pulled over by the copes and he has suitcases of money in the boot.
